DUBLIN-BASED NEWCOMER MARCUS UNVEILS HIS VIBRANT NEW SINGLE
‘THE JUICE’, OUT JUNE 9TH
Following on from the success behind his recent single ‘Redemption’, which garnered support from Spotify’s New Music Friday UK, New Pop UK, Chilled Pop Hits, Easy, and A Breath of Fresh Éire playlists, along with being picked up on by likes of Wonderland, The Independent, Irish Daily Star, Official Charts, RTE, Hotpress and the Gary Crowley show on BBC Radio London, fast-rising Irish artist Marcus has now returned with his swaggering new single ‘The Juice’.
The Juice’ reflects upon the time in his life when hip-hop was his true passion. While he still finds time to write raps during his creative spates, this new release shows Marcus in a more reflective state, presenting his roots in a raw and passionate direction that tells his coming of age story from growing up in Dublin.
‘The Juice’ was recorded at the famous Grouse Lodge studios with Alex Borwick.
Speaking about the new offering, he said, “I arrived in Grouse Lodge a day late, I had to take a Covid test a couple of days prior and wasn’t allowed down until I got my result. When I got there Alex had pretty much made the beat already. Sometimes I’m fussy in the studio and it can take some time to get a beat together, but when I heard this one I knew that it was perfect for the song and all we had to do was drop some vocals on it.”
Accompanied by a stunning new video, created alongside Alan Dunne from Stubborn Monkey Media, the new visuals look to take us on a nostalgic tour of Marcus’ own inspirations, showing us the environment in which this song was created and where his influences lie.
Adding about the new video, he said, “I teamed up with Alan Dunne from Stubborn Monkey Media on this video. We had worked together before on the Obey video and we got on great. We shot the bedroom scenes in my old room in my Dad’s place and proceeded to take the bed all around Dublin. It was a lot of fun and passer-bys were pretty curious. It was my first time in front of a camera too, which can take some getting used to but we got there in the end.”
Born and raised in the Irish capital of Dublin, singer and songwriter Marcus always felt the urge to write and perform music. Learning to play the guitar in his preadolescence, he spent much of his childhood dabbling in songwriting before giving up the craft in his teenage years. But when he turned 19, the urge to get back on the wagon was too much to ignore and he began to take his commitment to music much more seriously.
Growing up in a varied musical household, Marcus’ influences came from two distinct areas. His Dad’s love of musicians such as Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Bob Marley, as well as his growing love affair with hip-hop. These two almost polarising tastes are what first engaged the artist to create his own direction, fusing the creative and inventive style of so many acts he admired to create something he could call his own.
His drive to create and perform music was so strong that he ended dropping out of university early to get a headstart on a career that he knew was in his blood. Starting out on Dublin’s fledgling open mic circuit, including regular stints at the city’s legendary venue Whelan’s, he began to embark on an almost guerilla-like approach to promoting his own music. Keeping much of his interest in the scene away from his friends, it wasn’t until he began to post videos of himself singing on Facebook that everyone suddenly saw the talent they were dealing with.
His first set of releases were self-financed by his time working in a pizza restaurant and in 2020, Marcus self-released his debut single ‘Obey’ through tunecore, a track that instantly made an impact. Picked up by a number of influential Spotify playlists, including Alt Pop, A Breath of Fresh Eire, An Alternative Eire and The Best of Fresh Eire, he also landed enormous amounts of praise within the tastemaker media, with Hot Press, Earmilk, RTE, Buzz.ie and many more jumping on to support the young artist.
