CONCERT REVIEW : Frank Carter & The Sex Pistols – o2 Academy Glasgow 22nd September 2024

Sunday couldn’t come quickly enough for many, eagerly anticipating the reunion of Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, joined by Frank Carter. The evening was shrouded in mystery, save for the familiar tunes. Questions about how the night would unfold were likely on the minds of every attendee lining up to enter the sold out event. The audience spanned generations, from the young to the elderly, a wonderful testament to the enduring appeal of the band’s music across many decades.

The opening act was the alternative rock group Dirty Blonde from Manchester, led by Ailis Mackay and Hayley Tait. It was their debut in the city, and they immediately impressed the audience. As soon as they hit the stage and began with their hit “Come Over,” the Glasgow audience was intrigued, initially puzzled about the source of the lead vocals since Hayley could be seen providing backup vocals. The crowd’s excitement peaked when Ailis made her dramatic entrance from the front of the stage, captivating the Glasgow audience with her presence.

The band delivered an electrifying brief opening set that immediately captivated the Glasgow crowd. Among the set’s highlights were the standout track “Northern Twang,” which they noted was a fitting representation since they hail from the north of England—marking their debut performance in Scotland. The set also featured two particularly memorable songs, “Rush” and the exceptional “Run,” which concluded their performance. It was evident that the band thoroughly enjoyed playing for the Glasgow audience, who warmly welcomed them from beginning to end. They undoubtedly made a lasting impression on Glasgow and eagerly anticipate their next opportunity to play in the city. The band waved their farewells as they exited the stage.

The moment had arrived; the stage crew had finished setting up for The Sex Pistols’ comeback, now featuring Frank Carter as the lead vocalist. The venue dimmed into darkness, and as the introductory music began, a buzz of excitement filled the air. Steve Jones was the first to appear, making his way from the back of the stage, closely followed by Paul Cook who settled behind the drum kit, and then Glen Matlock. Frank Carter received a thunderous welcome as he took his place on stage. The group commenced their Never Mind the Bollocks tour with a rousing performance of “Holidays in the Sun.” This event marked the first opportunity for Glasgow audiences to witness Frank Carter alongside the legendary members of the Sex Pistols.

This was truly a wow moment. Frank’s performance was spectacular right from the beginning, captivating the audience much like Johnny did back in 1977. The energy and emotion he brought to the stage were exceptional, making his own unique imprint on the legacy of the Sex Pistols. Tonight’s event was a tribute to the songs and music of a generation that, in a curious way, closely mirrors the vibes of today’s scene.

Some of the initial standout moments of the concert included renditions of Pretty Vacant, Bodies, and Silly Thing, with the Glasgow crowd fully engaged and singing along enthusiastically. As Frank prepared for a more interactive segment, he encouraged the audience to create space for a circle pit, signalling his intent to join them on the floor. This move clearly strengthened his connection with the audience. The energy remained high as they performed rousing versions of God Save The Queen, Submission, and a memorable performance of No Feelings. Wrapping up the set, the band played No Fun and Problems, leading to a climactic moment as the crowd went wild during E.M.I., just before the band exited the stage, leaving the audience exhilarated.

Frank stepped into the spotlight and announced that he would be performing the song “My Way” in his unique style. As Glen and Steve moved aside, Frank took centre stage and delivered a rendition that was distinctly his own, captivating the Glasgow audience who joined in singing. The performance was met with tremendous applause. The evening could only conclude with one final number, “Anarchy In The UK,” which saw both the band and the audience unite in a spirited finale, ending the night memorably.
