CONCERT REVIEW : Liam Gallagher & John Squire – Barrowland Ballroom Glasgow 13th March 2024

The atmosphere was electric as the opening night of the highly anticipated tour featuring Liam Gallagher and the former Stone Roses guitarist kicked off at the iconic Barrowland venue. The sold-out crowd had eagerly lined up outside the venue, stretching around the block, in a beautiful display of anticipation. Fans from all walks of life, spanning across generations, had flocked to this historical event, united by their collective excitement to witness the musical genius of these two legendary figures.

As the lights dimmed, Jake Bugg stepped onto the stage to thunderous applause from the enthusiastic Glasgow audience. True to his reputation, he delivered an outstanding performance that featured a mix of his old hits and new tracks. He had the crowd hooked from the start.”With every song, including the crowd favourites “I Wrote the Book,” “Hold Tight,” “Simple as This,” and “Two Fingers,” he exuded a genuine joy and appreciation for the audience’s presence, thanking them for coming. Jake’s talent and charisma completely captivated the venue, almost at full capacity. Finishing the set with the unforgettable “Lighting Bolt,” the audience erupted in applause, giving him a well-deserved send-off from the Glasgow crowd.

The atmosphere in the venue was charged with excitement and anticipation as the crowd eagerly awaited the performances of Liam Gallagher and John Squire. As the PA music played, the buzz in the air escalated, and the audience began to chant for the band. With a slightly delayed entrance, the volume in the venue amplified. Taking their positions on stage, the band kicked off their set with the popular single “Just Another Rainbow,” prompting the fans to join in with the lyrics. It was during the extended guitar solo that the exceptional talent of John Squire shone through, captivating the audience’s attention.

It was evident from the start that the band was thoroughly enjoying themselves as they witnessed the crowd’s reaction to the opening song. As the stage lighting brightened, their energy seemed to increase, and they appeared more relaxed. The band continued their mesmerising performance with the incredible Mars to Liverpool, followed by a selection of album tracks that truly came alive in the live setting. Standout songs like One Day At A Time, I’m A Wheel, You’re Not The Only One, and I’m So Bored took on a whole new level of intensity and passion. The fans’ excitement mirrored this sentiment, making for an unforgettable experience.

Despite the calls for the big Oasis songs, this particular moment was not the appropriate time or place for them. Nevertheless, Oasis and the Barrowland had shared countless unforgettable nights together over the years. However, tonight was different; it brought a sense of freshness and power due to the presence of a new band and their new album. Liam and John managed to captivate the vast majority of fans, leaving a lasting impression that would only grow stronger with time. Although the set was short, as they only had the new album to perform, the closing songs, “Mother Nature’s Song” and the excellent single “Raise Your Hands,” provoked an overwhelming response from the crowd, sending their voices soaring through the venue’s roof. As the final chord resonated, the band members waved goodbye to the ecstatic audience and exited the stage.
