MIMI WEBB TAKES OVER THE GLASGOW ACADEMY WITH STUNNING PERFORMANCE
Latest sensation Mimi Webb is on a UK tour to promote her debut album Amelia and stopped off at the O2 Academy to thrill her huge army of fans in Glasgow. Backed by the upcoming talents of Henry Moodie and Blake Rose, it would be a great evening of entertainment for the young crowd assembled in the old converted cinema in the southside of the city.
First to take the stage was Henry Moodie. Having initially rose to fame mainly via the Tik Tok app, he was known for performing covers of other artists work, and in his short set tonight he would cover a track by Taylor Swift, which gave the crowd their first singalong of the evening. Moodie is a talented singer and musician however his lack of originality could hold him back. Decent but nothing we havent heard before.
Onto Blake Rose next. The 21 year old from Perth, Australia is currently drawing a lot of attention from his early recordings and performances, and has already been singled out as a top prospect for the not so distance future. His style combines indie rock with pop and soul and cites the likes of Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and The 1975 as musical influences. Backed by a guitarist and drummer, we had the full band sound rather than the solo musicianship of Moodie the earlier performer, and adding his own musical contribution to the overall sound via guitar or keyboard, his slot was well received by the ever increasing numbers in the Academy. Could be one to look out for soon.
Mimi Webb is fast becoming a big name in British music. The 23 year old singer and songwriter from Canterbury has firmly established herself as one of the best new British female acts over the last two years or so, having released her debut single in 2021. Now taking to the road to promote her album Amelia, this gives Webb the chance to showcase her talents as an all round headline performer.
The Academy in Glasgow had massive queues around the block on arrival, the first problem was how to squeeze them all inside, but well done to security for keeping everyone in check. When it was time for the headliner, the lights went down, the band took to the stage and the screams of approval from the fans was deafening. Arriving on top of a short platform, the few steps down to the main stage could prove an obstacle with the heals Mimi was wearing, but top marks for manoeuvring them. Dressed in a very revealing all in one lacy body suit with fasteners protecting her modesty in certain areas, the young singer strutted her stuff with ease, with arrogance and with confidence across the stage.
Opening with Ghost of You, her set would mainly consist of the dozen tracks from her album, and some single released from her short career to date. Remind You, See You Soon, 24/5, the lyrics to the songs draw on life experiences, they are honest and heartfelt, and the music is catchy. Certainly keeping a massive grin on all the young fan’s faces in the audience as they dance about to their hero.
Title track from the album Amelia, Roles Reversed then her debut single Before I Go closed the first act before a three strong encore of Last Train to London, Red Flags and final song of the evening House on Fire. The singer took her bows to a euphoric applause, every one in full appreciation of the show they had witnessed, and they dwindled into the cold Glasgow evening.
Mimi Webb is going places, and on performances like this it won’t be long before she is selling out the bigger venues in cities around Europe. A great night for her adoring fans, and definitely a star in the making.
