Glasgow’s West End on a warm evening in August and the legendary Squeeze are here to perform on the iconic Kelvingrove bandstand.
Born in the 1970’s, Squeeze who are known for their classic hits that spread across the decades are, in fact, in the process of recording a new album.
Can they still cut it after all these years (and numerous changes of band members)?
The magnificent 100 year old outdoor venue is superb both as a spectacle and as a music venue. The old amphitheatre and bandstand lend themselves to a great musical experience.
Starting the night’s entertainment is Beautiful Landing from London and, with Glenn Tilbrook’s son front and centre, they are welcomed on stage by a very large crowd enjoying some rare Scottish sunshine
The band is obviously known to most in the crowd as they received a rapturous welcome; the crowd even participated in a bit of a communal sing along at one point.
Harmless, well executed commercial rock was the order of the day from Beautiful Landing… string bending solos and posturing from Tilbrook Jnr and laid back accompaniment from his cohorts.
The set was safe, well played and well received; a good night’s work from the youngsters.
The amphitheatre was at bursting point as Squeeze took to the stage a short time later.
With the confident stride of seasoned performers the Squeeze lads took to the stage and were met by a wall of noisy appreciation from the sun kissed crowd. Tilbrook Snr replaced his son front and centre and with that we were underway… Squeeze were back in town!
The set list was a veritable delight of mega hits and some new tunes.
The first offering from the not yet released new album was “It’s Over” and, in all truth, it received a lukewarm warm reception from the crowd… albeit, a crowd who have become accustomed to the aforementioned mega hits.
The noise levels and singalongs weren’t missing for much of the concert to be fair… “Up the Junction”, “Hourglass”, “Cool for Cats” and “Tempted” were all lapped up by those fortunate enough to be in attendance.
Other than a couple of songs to slow down and catch their collective breath, Squeeze were relentless and they obviously enjoyed their time in the Glasgow.
As the sun set on Glasgow and the band safely ensconced back stage an energised crowd were left wanting for more. Alas, it was not to be and the lucky few made their way to the exits and, perhaps to the many watering holes of the Glasgow West end.
Another night at the Kelvingrove Bandstand; another success; another crowd left wanting more… it has always been thus at The Bandstand!
