CONCERT REVIEW : The Snuts – Barrowland Glasgow 27th February 2024

The first night of two The Snuts album launch nights at the famous Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom was an electrifying affair. With both nights sold out, the anticipation was palpable as fans gathered outside the iconic venue, eager to secure the best spot to catch the show. The diverse fanbase, spanning all ages, added to the vibrant atmosphere built within the walls of Barrowland. As the countdown commenced, the excitement soared, setting the stage for a memorable night for both the opening artist and The Snuts.

Kerr Mercer, a local lad with outstanding talent, kicked off the night impressively. Armed with his piano, acoustic guitar, and an incredible voice, he captivated the audience from the moment he strummed the opening chords of his first song. Kerr’s performance was a harmonious blend of piano and acoustic guitar melodies, with standout moments such as his excellent rendition of “Timeless” on the guitar and the hauntingly beautiful “Carry Me Home.” Clearly grateful for the opportunity to open for The Snuts, Kerr expressed his delight and continued to captivate the Glasgow crowd with the heartfelt “One In A Million” before wrapping up his short set with the remarkable “Guess I Flew Too Close To The Sun,” earning him a well-deserved round of applause.

Theo Bleak took the stage with her band, captivating the audience of friends and family with her stunning voice and undeniable talent. From the moment she began with the enchanting “To The Boys,” her sweet and mesmerising vocals held everyone’s attention. Her band’s class and skill only added to the magic as she smiled and embraced the moment on the famous stage, following in the footsteps of her musical heroes. Her short but impactful setlist featured favorites like “Just Like You” and “Raining All The Time,” along with the debut of a new song, “I Was Loved Once,” showcasing her captivating melodies and spine-chilling vocals. Ending the set with the excellent “Waiting Room” and the perfect final note of “Homer,” Theo Bleak left a lasting impression and left the audience eagerly anticipating her next performance.

Adorning the stage was a perfect Millennial theme, complete with a lamp post, traffic cone, TVs, and a record player. As the lights dimmed in the venue, it was time for The Snuts, the West Lothian band, to take centre stage. The enthusiastic Glasgow crowd welcomed Jack Cochrane, Joe McGillveray, Callum Wilson, and Jordan Mackay with a rousing reception. Opening their set with songs from their new album, they defied the album track order and gave the audience a little shuffle. The Barrowland Crowd instantly connected with the band, singing along to the excellent Novastar, despite the album’s recent release on the 23rd of the month. The fans’ dedication and love for the new album continued as they passionately sang along to Millionaires, Yoyo, NPC, and the incredible Butterside Down.

The band’s performance was electric, as they delighted in playing the album in its entirety to their devoted fans, who sang every word back to them with sheer delight. It was clear that the band was in their element, showcasing their new songs and demonstrating their growth and maturity in their craft. From the captivating “Gloria” to the mesmerising “Deep Diving,” the band had the entire crowd dancing, clapping, and fully engaged. The highlight of the night came with the awe-inspiring performance of “Circles,” a song that resonated deeply and sounded even more incredible live. As the final track from the new album played, the band knew they had won over the crowd and transitioned seamlessly into playing their hit songs and fan favourites.

During the show, there was a brief interruption when Sir Rod Stewart made a surprise guest appearance.  The audience booed loudly as he sang Maggie May, much to their dismay.  The band orchestrated a fun prank with a Rod Stewart impersonator. The band then continued with an electrifying performance of their songs, including What’s Going On, Hallelujah Moment, Always, and The Rodeo, which had the entire Barrowland venue bouncing along. Although it was nearing the end of the night, both the audience and the band knew there was still more to give, as they delivered an excellent performance of All My Friends, Knuckles, and Maybe California.

Tonight’s performance was a testament to the power of music, as fans from all over southern England made the journey to witness the band’s new album showcase. With just a few songs remaining, the band thrilled their devoted fans with the astounding “Seasons.” Closing the show with the iconic “Glasgow,” the crowd erupted in full voice and danced along, making it clear that this was the perfect song to end the night.
