CONCERT REVIEW : TWIN ATLANTIC – O2 ACADEMY GLASGOW 24TH MAY 2024

The second night of the band performing in their hometown was electric with anticipation. As the fans gathered at the venue, their excitement was palpable, with some of them eagerly discussing how incredible the show had been the night before. Tonight’s concert promises to be an electrifying evening of rock and alternative music, as recent SAMAS winners Bottle Rocket and Saint Phnx set the stage on fire with their powerful performances. The energy will be at an all-time high as the crowd eagerly awaits the headlining act, Twin Atlantic, who are wrapping up their two-night stint at the venue. First up at the show was the Bottle Rockets, a local four-piece band with a female frontwoman who commanded the stage with her powerful voice and stage presence reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux. Their short but impactful set had the audience hooked from the start, with standout songs like Winter Baby and Backburn leaving a lasting impression. The band expressed their gratitude for opening for Twin Atlantic at the o2 Academy and introduced themselves as Kenzi Murray, John Tamburrini, Andrew Cummings, and Sam Rae. Next up is Saint Phnx, the Scottish band hailing from Wishaw, just outside Glasgow, featuring brothers Steve and Alan Jukes. They kicked off the show with an electrifying performance of “Glorious,” setting the tone for a power-driven show. Despite their short set, the band managed to encapsulate a range of emotions, energy, and passion throughout their performance. Standout moments included tracks like “Us Against the World,” “Something in the Water,” and the crowd-favourite “Happy Place,” which had everyone in the venue singing along and dancing. The brothers expressed their gratitude to Twin Atlantic for bringing them along for the ride, and it’s clear they were in top form. It was time to welcome Sam McTrusty, Ross McNae, Barry McKenna, and Joe Lazarus, who are Twin Atlantic, to the stage. As the intro music played, you could feel the electric atmosphere right down the back of your neck as the crowd waited for the first sight of the band on stage. As the band entered one by one, the noise level within the venue turned up a few notches, and as the first sight of frontman Sam McTrusty appeared from the rear of the stage, the level went up further. The anticipation in the air was palpable as the crowd erupted in cheers and applause, ready for a night of incredible music from the talented Scottish rock band.

The band opened the show with the excellent Get Out, followed by Asleep, which had the crowd eating out of their hands from the very beginning. Hometown gigs are always special, but tonight was particularly momentous as it was the 2nd show at the o2 Academy, and you could sense that this performance was going to surpass all previous ones. The energy and excitement in the venue were electric, and it was clear that the band was ready to deliver a truly unforgettable show.

As Sam stood at the front of the stage, he made sure to engage with every fan in the crowd, locking eyes with many and creating an electric atmosphere. This particular night was a celebration, with the band delivering an energetic performance of fan-favourite songs such as “Make a Beast of Myself,” “Stuck in a Car With You,” “Barcelona,” and “Bang on the Gong.” The music enthralled the audience, inspiring them to sing along to every word and dance with unbridled joy. The connection between the band and the crowd was palpable, making it a truly unforgettable evening for everyone involved.

Over the years, the band has truly grown and evolved, both in their musical sound and their presence on stage. Their latest performance showcased a seamless blend of their earlier hits with their newer material, proving that their sound is timeless and still resonates with fans old and new. A standout in their set was “World Class Entertainment,” which captivated the audience with its energy and memorable hooks. Sam’s heartfelt acoustic rendition of “Oceans” was a poignant moment in the show, as he shared the personal story behind the song and its connection to his sister’s tattoo, adding an intimate touch that left the crowd deeply moved. The enthusiastic response made it clear that the band has successfully matured while maintaining the essence of what made them special from the start.

As the concert neared its end, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation for the final numbers. The band decided to close the show with a sing-along of the brilliant song “Brothers & Sisters,” creating a sense of unity and camaraderie among the audience. The energy in the room was amazing, a testament to the band’s dynamic presence and the enthusiastic crowd’s reception.
