Bravely continuing to pave the way for LGBTQ pride, Australian alt-pop outfit Cub Sport finally confirm details of their anticipated fourth album, ‘LIKE NIRVANA,’ out May 8th via the band’s own label, Cub Sport Records/Believe. Ahead of that the band drop the first single, ‘Confessions’ out now

Following the release of their acclaimed visual triple A-side ‘333’ and the announcement of a US tour that promises further international dates, their brand new track, ‘Confessions’ unveils a new era for Cub Sport.

Soft in its vulnerabilities and direct in its effect, ‘Confessions’ draws you in with its heart then breaks out into an explosive purging of energy and emotion. True to its namesake, ‘Confessions’ is a gritty introspective slow burn with gently thundering guitars, crackling drums and an achingly tender vocal, all at once visceral and triumphant in its beauty. This account of rousing personal revelation is yet another ambitious evolution for the band’s seemingly unstoppable ascent and an exciting taster of the upcoming new record.

Tim Nelson: “Confessions feels like an emotional purge. The lyrics flowed in a stream of consciousness and when I listened back, I realised I’d articulated lots of things I’d been avoiding saying out loud. Musically, it’s really different to anything I’ve written and produced before. It’s gritty, soaring and liberating, you feel it as much as you hear it. I’m hoping this song sets other people free the way it has for me.”

Since Nelson came out publicly as gay in 2017, Cub Sport has been a new band, one defined by radical openness and acceptance. Three years on from that momentous period of time, though, Nelson is finally ready to explore the darker side of their psyche that comes alongside living so much of your life in hiding. The release of ‘LIKE NIRVANA’ also coincides with Nelson’s decision to move forward identifying as ‘free’, positioning themselves outside the gender binary and embracing the use of both neutral pronouns (they/them/their) and male pronouns (he/him/his). “I am free to follow my heart, free to flow with the energies inside and around me, free to form my own self not built by others” they say. This new freedom is present throughout ‘LIKE NIRVANA.’

With over 100 million streams on Spotify and 1.2 million monthly listeners, Cub Sport are revered by their loyal and ever-growing fanbase around the world as a glistening symbol for queer pride, self-love and acceptance.  2019 proved to be a pivotal year for the band. Celebrating the release of their third album ‘Cub Sport’ the record had huge critical acclaim, charting at Number 1 on the Australian album chart and staying in the independent album chart for over 12 weeks. They also charted in iTunes in Australia, Spain, Germany, Austria and South Africa. Their victorious tour of Europe included a sold out headline show at London’s Scala and they had their first play on BBC Radio 1, along with a playlist on Radio X. 2019 also saw their iconic ‘Come On Mess Me Up’ go certified platinum, ‘Chasin’ go certified gold, and their track ‘Party Pill’ hit the Triple J Hottest 100 – their 4th consecutive year being voted into the prestigious list.

The new era of Cub Sport is equal parts exhilarating and heartfelt as they continue to break boundaries, evolve and carve out a space of their own that has never before been occupied in pop music.

Cub Sport are a completely independent, self-managed four-piece from Brisbane, Australia consisting of Tim Nelson (singer/songwriter/producer), Zoe Davis (lead guitar, bass, vocals), Sam ‘Bolan’ Netterfield (keyboards, vocals) and Dan Puusaari (drums).

‘LIKE NIRVANA’ is out May 8th. Stay tuned for more details coming soon.
