GRAMMY-nominated global star Tyla may have had a whirlwind 2023, but she is already gearing up for an even bigger 2024. The South African star announces her self-titled debut album, TYLA, set to arrive in early 2024, along with a pre-order and the release of three brand new tracks, ‘Truth or Dare’, ‘Butterflies’ and, ‘On&On’, which premiered as a COLORS exclusive.

Tyla isn’t just topping charts, she’s making history. When her smash hit ‘Water’ ascended to its current Top 10 position on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, Tyla became the highest-charting African female solo artist ever on the Hot 100 chart. It’s fair to say that ‘Water’ has taken the world by storm since its release in July, and Tyla now stands tall as the most listened to African artist on Spotify, with 29M monthly listeners, reaching Number 5 in the UK Charts for 3 weeks, and she’s been in the Top 10 for 8 consecutive weeks (currently sitting at no.5), Number 1 on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart, and nominated for a 2024 Grammy for Best African Music Performance.
The 21 year old rising superstar self-titled debut will represent the culmination of what’s been an incredible journey to this point for the young artist, but also an exciting beginning. With three new songs to go with the star-studded remixes of her smash hit ‘Water’, from Travis Scott (listen here) and Marshmello (listen here), Tyla’s mission to help push her native Amapiano sound to global heights is well underway. Tyla and Scott debuted their version of their remix at GQ’s Man of the Year Party, one of the most exclusive annual parties of the year.
Tyla’s pack of pre-release songs span a variety of the young star’s styles, from the uptempo frequencies of ‘Water’ and ‘Truth or Dare’ to the subdued, acoustic atmosphere of ‘Butterflies’. In conversation with Cosmopolitan in October, Tyla emphasised her will to fuse genres and styles as she explores her artistry. “Rap, R&B, pop, our type of House in South Africa—not the oontz-oontz type. Jazz, literally almost everything,” she says, describing the music that soundtracked her youth. “So I had a wide variety, and I fell in love with it all. I think that’s why my sound is a fusion of a lot of different things—because I don’t like just one sound.”
Jennifer Hudson couldn’t resist the magic of ‘Water’ this month, inviting Tyla onto Hudson’s heralded talk show, ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’, for a tutorial for the dance that dominated TikTok this summer. Tyla also made her US TV debut earlier this fall performing ‘Water’ on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. The critically acclaimed performance is currently at 4.7 million views and counting on YouTube.
Tipped by i-D, NME, PAPER Magazine, CLASH and more, the Johannesburg native introduced herself internationally with her debut ‘Getting Late’ featuring Kooldrink, ’To Last’, and her sizzling hit ‘Been Thinking’, produced by multiple GRAMMY Award-winning producer Tricky Stewart (Beyoncé, Rihanna), Tyla has collaborated with Ayra Starr on ‘Girl Next Door’ and Major Lazer & Major League DJz on ‘Ke Shy’. Tyla performed ‘Water’ live for the first time to an adoring crowd at Afronation, and then opened for Chris Brown on the European leg of his Under The Influence Tour, which included five dates at London’s O2 Arena.
Tyla is just getting started.
