Today sees international superstar Lewis Capaldi unveil his stunning new piano anthem-in-waiting, and third single, ‘Wish You The Best’ – taken from his brand new record Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent – out May 19th on EMI Records.
The Scot’s return has been simply phenomenal, picking straight back up where he left off on his debut, rocketing straight to the top of the UK singles chart in September last year with comeback track ‘Forget Me’, which became Platinum-certified and smashed over 200 million streams globally. That quickly turned into a back-to-back fourth UK number 1 with stunning second single ‘Pointless’, an honour that equalled the likes of Whitney Houston, Cher, Jay-Z, One Direction, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake and Usher. Not to mention selling out his biggest shows wherever he goes, including his recent UK & EU arena tour, as he currently sweeps his way across a sold out North American arena tour, with festival headline shows, his biggest outdoor performances to date, as well as a sold out Australia & New Zealand arena tour still to come.
Lewis has never sounded better than when he’s doing things on his own terms, nor writes better when he has faith in his own abilities – something that new track ‘Wish You The Best’ showcases in spades. Co-written partly in Los Angeles with JP Saxe and Malay, and finished at home in Glasgow, it’s Lewis Capaldi at his very best: reminiscent lyrics steeped in yearning, sparse piano, and a simply stratospheric chorus to boot.
“Wish You The Best came from the idea of a person you used to be with, telling you all this amazing stuff about their life, without you in it,” explains Lewis. “It’s a song about what we don’t say to those people. I was fascinated by the things left unsaid, whether that be in a relationship or a friendship.”
For the video, Lewis presents a heart-melting video all but guaranteed to induce a good cry. The video follows an older mail carrier named John and his faithful companion, a scruffy and sweet-faced dog called Willow. As the video unfolds, its cycle-of-life narrative shines a warm light on the devastating pain of loss and the redemptive power of love, infusing each moment with the kind of unaffected emotional truth that leaves a lasting imprint on the heart. The brand new single follows the recent release of Lewis’ special, raw and honest feature length music documentary ‘Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now’, in partnership with Netflix, BMG, & Pulse Films – available to watch globally on Netflix now and which shot straight to the top of the Netflix chart, making it the most watched film on the platform since its release. Directed by BAFTA winner Joe Pearlman (Harry Potter 20th Anniversary, After the Screaming Stops) the all-access film is the story of a young artist, returning to his roots after achieving unbelievable global success, attempting to reconnect with his old life and the family and friends he left behind.
Along with the release of the documentary, Lewis also unveiled the brutally honest title track ‘How I’m Feeling Now’, which will also feature on the upcoming new album.
For that highly anticipated second album, the idea has been simple but potent: to go in and do the exact same thing. No bells, whistles or starry featured vocalists, and no ruinously expensive stays in distant studios. Like it was on his debut, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent is straight-up, full-force honesty.
Selling over 10 million copies worldwide, debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent propelled Capaldi from bedroom musician to superstar. Few have seen a debut release quite like it, becoming the biggest selling UK album of 2019 & 2020, spawning two UK number 1 singles, bagging a few BRITs and a Grammy nomination, with one of those number 1’s becoming a smash hit on both sides of the globe in ‘Someone You Loved’, which recently became the UK’s most streamed song of ALL TIME.
Having recently taking on his 2023 UK & European arena tour which sold out in a matter of seconds, and now embarking on his biggest ever sold-out headline tour of North America, Lewis will headline Reading & Leeds Festival in August, perform at Glastonbury Festival, as well as play his biggest headline summer shows to date to over 30,000 fans a night in Manchester & Belfast, as well as two nights in Edinburgh. See his full touring schedule HERE.
If his first album made him an international star, with his second it’s nothing less than superstardom that beckons. The insatiable appetite for Capaldi burns as bright as ever.
“I’m ready,” he concludes, champing at the bit to get back out there, “and so are the songs.”
