SQUID are releasing two covers via Bandcamp – https://squiduk.bandcamp.com/ – with all proceeds being donated to the Food Bank charity in Bristol. The artwork has been created by artist and friend of the band John Molesworth.
First up is their idiosyncratic take on CLAPPING MUSIC by legendary composer STEVE REICH. Originally recorded as part of a session for NME, their version augments the polyrhythmic handclaps with synths, horns and even vocals, lifted from an interview Steve Reich did on the piece.
The second is their off-the-cuff version of PIGS by cult hero ROBERT WYATT, performed at End of The Road Festival in 2019. The performance was part of The Line of Best Fit’s Piano Stage programme and was the first time the band played the song.
Both tracks have had a healthy dose of producer Dan Carey’s Midas touch for your listening pleasure.
The band explain their reasons for sharing this music now:
“We’ve all been affected by Covid-19 in some way, but for people who were already struggling, the pandemic has increased the likelihood of lasting difficulties that will continue long after lockdown comes to an end. All of the proceeds will be given to the East Bristol Food Bank who are offering vital support in the local area, covering the whole city across five outlets. Both tracks showcase SQUID’s kinetic energy when performing live, and also represent the closest opportunity you’ll likely get to hear them perform live this year.
SQUID recently unveiled their AA-side singles SLUDGE and BROADCASTER, alongside news of signing to Warp Records. The singles are available on 10” vinyl featuring an extended version of BROADCASTER.
